In her series 'Jongens' Annemarie Dekker searches for the boy within the model. Whereas society expects boys to be masculine and tough, in the portraits they appear more vulnerable. Her images are made using a 50mm lens. Therefore she often stands just a few inches from her model. The inconvenience that arises from standing so close, and the trust that must exist between the model and the photographer, creates portraits that make you wonder who this boy is and what moves him.

The portraits are deliberately in black and white and the background contains as little distraction as possible. The focus is all on the eyes, the soft glance and the posture of the boy.
